The house in is lit by oil lamps -the doctor treated his patient by oil lamps. Yet in the opening scene after plastering the wall by oil lamp as they leave the attic he turns of the electric light with the switch by the door. Electric light in the loft but no where else in the house - I dont think so. What a wonderful program.
I didnt know about it till episode 3 so caught up with it on iplayer. Currently watching episode 4. Its great to watch seeing places i am familiar with. Lived in Droylsden most of my life and both my daughters went to Fairfield High School in the square. Its a lovely location and doesnt feel like it is in the middle of a busy town. I have thoroughly enjoyed this programme. I dont watch the bbc much only for doctors and casualty but i must admit this is good.
Cant wait for the conclusion but I suppose I will have to. I often wonder who lived in my house before me so I am not the only one. Well done everyone. What a fantastic Drama ,came across it on Tuesday when flicking the channels Deserves prime slot as I think many are missing a very Good story. I find myself waiting for the next day to see more 'flashbacks' Well Done BBC but its a shame many are missing such great TV its a sure success and will get even a greater following on prime My family live on the settlement and we go to the church there.
I did see some of the filming and the show really shows off the settlement. It's incredible that all the houses there are unique and lends themselves to period drama's like Brinkburn St.
Great story based on 1 house and family - well done BBC. I am thoroughly enjoying the series and shall look forward to other time line series as it provides great scope for story telling. My only criticism would have been a s working class house having a hot and cold tap over the kitchen sink but having now read about the use of the real house rather than just a set it becomes clear why the hot tap had to stay. Well written, acted and good attention to detail.
Firstly, thanks to everyone who's been watching this week and thank you so much for your comments. It really is lovely to hear such positive feedback. Liontop, you're absolutely right about the white windows; all of my research pointed towards brown window frames in the s in this level of housing.
To make this happen, however, would have required a substantial amount of money of which we didn't have and additionally wasn't integral to telling the story. For instance, not painting the windows would enable me to have more strong period props such as a horse and cart or a period vehicle on screen: items like this instantly create atmosphere and place the audience in the chosen era far more effectively than the colour of window frames.
Regarding the lighting in the house Thomas, we decided to use both electric lighting and oil lamps, which, historically, was feasible. If the entire house had been a set build, we would most definitely have made the decision to light the house by oil lamps alone as this is far more atmospheric and evokes a bygone era immediately.
As it was, we filmed on the most part in a real house and it would have cost too much to replace all of the electric light fittings with oil. Instead, the lamp shades were replaced with period ones and the light itself dimmed to reflect the different quality of the bulbs back then.
I hope my comments help to explain the processes that are undertaken when designing a production. Thanks again to everyone for watching and taking the time to post your comments. What a thoroughly enjoyable series, I enjoy family sagas anyway but found this one quite gripping. What a refreshing change from all the doctor series, police series, cooking series, I've not even going to mention some series which have gone on far too long and have turned into pure rubbish.
Congratulations on an excellent piece of television viewing, please let's have more. Me and my mother thought this drama was brilliantly written and directed. It should of been prime time TV so that others could of watched and been thrilled by what we saw.
I'd like to know is there a second part to this drama, you have left us hanging in the balance of how it ended. We would like to know what happened to all the characters after that. Well done bbc, please, please can we have more. I have just looked forward to and throroughly enjoyed the final episode of 32 Brinkburn Street and like other bloggers I feel sssoooooo frustrated to have so many questions left unanswered.
Is this a tease to keep viewers wanting more for a future series? What a brilliant series this was, well done to the BBC. I love family saga's and this had me sitting on the edge of my seat all the way through. Lo and behold if anyone dare to knock on my door or I had to answer the phone! You could hear a pin drop Is there going to be a follow up? Please and please and pretty please I do hope so.
How did the family cope living in that house all them years, knowing that there was a body in the coal celler or did they move away? What happened to Violet? Did Gracie eventually go to America in the end?
Why did Frank say little Norah died - what does he mean - when she was still young or what? I and many others I guess would love to find out. Just finished watching this series on the iPlayer and I loved it! It reminded me of good quality drama on TV that the whole family used to look forward to, and enjoyed so much, many years ago. I really wish there was more like this on the TV today.
The sets were wonderful, the furniture, the clothes, the expressions of the characters etc etc. Congratulations, a real success!! Loved the series I also have many unanswered questions I thought this 5 part drama was excellent. I nearly missed it, but luckily I was able to record it and watch it later each day. This should have been televised later in the day, because I think loads of people will have missed out on it. Well done to all concerned in the making of 32 Brinkburn Street, it was brilliant.
This was a great drama I am sorry it was so short. I would love to know what happened to Violet and Nora. I really enjoyed this programme. This has been one of the most enjoyable series I have watched in years. Addicted to it from watching the first episode, it never once disappointed in content or authenticity. I grew up in Openshaw, just down Ashton Old Road, and have spent many afternoons walking through this area of Droylsden, it's wonderful that the area has been used for such a top class programme.
Everyone who was involved in this series deserves credit for it. Can we have more please? I came across it by accident on Tuesday and recorded the remaining programmes. I was surprised it was on daytime TV and would have expected it to have been on prime time. There were so many unanswered questions so there could be soooo many more episodes. Thank you BBC for a wonderful series, albeit too short! It's just plane cruel I hope there is a part I am going back to Canada next month after living in the UK 6 years and hope I won't miss any part 2's..
I've mostly had to record this series, in order to watch it later, but have to say well done to everyone involved in the making of 32 Brinkburn Street! I really think that there should be, at least, one more series where we could see how the lives of the 2 families progress afterwards. Please tell me theres more to come as want to know what happens.
Does the lovely Syd get on the Titanic never to be seen again?? Does Frank find out Syd was his father,so much more to be aired, please lets have more of Brinkburn Street. Why was this not on at peak viewing time its brilliant? Why on earth is the BBC airing this brilliant drama during the day. If I wasn't in a position to record it I would be most put out. These days rarely do I say "Licence money well spent".
Thank you. I love it - but please answer all the questions: What happened to little Norah? Did she die liek Frank said and if so how? What happened to Violet and her baby? Did she go to America? Why did Frank never know her? What happened to Gracie? Presumably if she did go she returned to bring Frank up in the house? Was Violet's baby actually Frank and brought up by Gracie and Walter as theirs?
Had she looked into the family more than she's letting on to ask to keep the photo? What happened to Ellie and Nick? Did they ever have kids? What happened to Frank? Did he get over finding the skeleton in the attic? Did he go to the nursing home?
Was there a police Investigation - what happened there? Hi just wanted to say what a great programme 32 brinkburn street was. Kath G. I thought this mini series was absolutely fantastic and was really clever in the way it compared and paralleled the two moments in time. As well as the historical angles, it also had the gripping elements of the various love interests and of course, the spooky secret. Made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck when they broke the wall down at the end and quite literally found the skeleton in the closet.
Well done BBC and all the cast on a really high quality and wonderfully acted production. Hope you will show it again in a prime time slot.
I have to say i was quite surprised by this. I barely watch TV let alone afternoon dramas, but i followed it over here as Ciaran was in it from Primeval. But I was not expecting to absolutely love the actual show as well. It was brilliantly written, very well done and contained some brilliant acting. Such a mixed ending as well, with the era ending in sadness but the modern era ending in happiness.
Loved the twist of Frank actually being 'Sid's' son but it was very sad the Grace didn't go with him in the end :. Loved the parallels between the two times they were very well done. Missed an episode of EastEnders? Missed an episode of Weather for the Week Ahead? Before you proceed Change preferences.
